1.5T or 3T – which is best to choose for the first stage of liver iron overload evaluation in children?

Purpose. To compare R2* values for liver iron concentration measurement at 1.5T and 3T MR scanners.

Materials and methods. 95 patients aged from 3 to 18 years with different siderosis grades were scanned on 1.5 and 3T MR scanners. For every participant liver R2* relaxometry maps were received.

Results. We established a linear relationship between liver R2* values for 1.5T and 3T MR scanners according to the 4 liver siderosis grades. The correlation coefficient in the first grade – r=0.91, in the second grade – r=0.9, in the third grade – r=0.68, in the fourth grade – r=0.93.

Conclusion. Our results demonstrated that the iron content in the liver can be assessed on both 1.5T and 3T scanners in pediatric patients with transfusional-dependent anemias.
