Normal MSCT- and fMSCT-anatomy of eustachian tube

Bodrova I.V., Olsufjeva A.V.

Purpose. To estimate the normal MSCT- and f MSCT-anatomy of the eustachian tube. Materials and methods. 15 healthy volunteers (30 eustachian tubes) were examined. Aver-age age was 32.4 ± 1.14 years. All volunteers have been examined MSCT and functional MSCT (fMSCT). The CT study was performed using a bone reconstruction filter without table movement and with slice thickness of 0.5–0.625 mm. The fMSCT study was performed using a soft-tissue reconstruction filter and with slice thickness of 0.5 mm, with dynamic scan mode with simultaneous exposure of the Valsalva test. The calculations of the average values of the parameters for the group and their standard deviations were applied. Results. The bony portion of the eustachian tube was visualized in the axial scan us-ing MSCT. Were obtained the mean values of the width of the bony portion in front of the isthmus and at the level of the attachment site of the tensor tympani muscle, which amount-ed to 1.1±0.21 mm and 3.82±0.4 mm respectively. Also, the mean thickness of the medial wall of the bony portion of the eustachian tube was obtained, which was 1.1±0.15 mm. The carti-laginous portion of the eustachian tube was visualized in the axial scan and oblique scan using fMSCT with simultaneous exposure of the Valsalva test. Were obtained mean values of mobility of the cartilaginous portion of the eustachian tube: the average amplitude of the mo-bility of the lumen in the region of the isthmus was 2.02±0.12 mm, the average amplitude of the lumen mobility in the cartilaginous portion is 3.31±0.35 mm, the average amplitude of lumen mobility in the region of the pharyngeal end is 7.94±0.55 mm. Conclusion. The obtained data can be used for a detailed assessment of each part of the eustachian tube.
